The new Wisma Geylang Serai is progressing well. I like the winning design unveiled yesterday. The centre will house a community club, the Southeast CDC office, arts and culture groups. It will be a splendid setting for the annual Hari Raya bazaar. I look forward to it becoming the heart of a new Geylang Serai! – LHL

Projek Wisma Geylang Serai berjalan lancar. - LHL

The winning design for the Wisma Geylang Serai Design Competition was awarded to Design-Environment Group Architects. Senior Parliamentary Secretary Maliki Osman shared that from the architectural point of view, the design struck a balance in featuring both contemporary and traditional elements.

The design’s use of the double-pitched roof is clearly influenced by traditional Malay houses and complements well with the adjacent Geylang Serai Market. At the same time, the design demonstrates a contemporary feel in its spatial planning, drawing inspiration from the “serai” plant to “ketupat” and “serambi” on stilts. It weaves and integrates multi-functional spaces and facilities into a cohesive overall design. This winning design, the jury panel believe, will help to both amplify the distinctive identity of Geylang Serai and strengthen its urban character.

The jury panel was also impressed by the seamless integration of spaces between the pedestrian mall and ground level of the civic centre. The winning design will encourage Wisma Geylang Serai to contribute activities and programmes to the wider Geylang Serai Precinct, and encourage vibrant street life all year round.
